Benefits of CO2 Laser Surgery:
The CO2 surgical laser can replace or supplement other surgical modalities in a wide range of general surgical applications. Compared to traditional methods, laser surgery leads to less swelling and bleeding, reduced pain and faster recovery.
Bleeding and swelling are minimized because the laser energy seals small blood vessels and lymphatics. The laser’s non-contact delivery does not tear or bruise tissue, leading to less pain and swelling. Laser energy sterilizes as it cuts, so risk of infection is also reduced. |
| We are dedicated to proper pain management at Aboite Animal Hospital, and therefore perform all cat declawing procedures utilizing our CO2 surgical laser unit. |
| The laser works extremely well on skin tumors, eyelid growths and oral tumors involving the gums, cheeks and tongue as well. |

At Aboite Animal Hospital, we understand the importance of appropriate intensive care for those critically ill and post surgery patients. This level of care may include administration of oxygen, intravenous fluid and electrolyte replacement, blood transfusion, pain management or an environmentally warm recovery unit. |
| If your dog is in need of a blood transfusion, our office mascot “Speed”, who is a greyhound with a universal blood type, will be present to do her part and donate blood to increase your pet’s chances of survival. |
| |
| In cases of kidney failure, dehydration, or extended periods of vomiting, diarrhea or anorexia, it becomes necessary to administer intravenous fluids and electrolytes “around the clock”. In our intensive care ward, we can have up to five animals at any point in time on infusion pumps which administer intravenously the correct number of drops of fluids per minute based upon the animal’s body weight and medical condition. |
| Controlling or eliminating pain following trauma or prior to a surgical procedure is not only the humane thing to do, but it also speeds up the healing process. Utilizing appropriate pain management protocols, all surgical patients receive a combination of analgesics prior to their surgical procedure to disrupt the pain cycle. |

At Aboite Animal Hospital, we emphasize the importance of dental care for your pets short and long term health. Here are a few questions and answers that will help to explain why good oral health is so important for our dogs and cats. |
Periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed disease of the dog and cat. It is estimated that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats that are 3 years of age or older have some level of periodontal disease. The process begins with salivary proteins and bacteria that adhere to the teeth and irritate the gums.If the plaque is removed at this stage, then the gum tissue will heal, and no further damage is done. |
| |
| However, with time the plaque will harden and form calculus, which is a hard, cement like substance. This hard surface is a great place for more bacteria and salivary proteins to adhere. With time the inflammation that is in the gum tissue will continue to progress and start to invade the structures around the tooth. As these support structures become inflamed and infected, the tooth begins to loosen and will eventually fall out. Before the tooth falls out or is removed, the inflammation and infection can have a devastating effect on the rest of the body. The bacteria produce toxins and inflammation produces inflammatory factors. These both stimulate the immune system. So with constant infection and inflammation, these bacteria, bacterial toxins, and inflammatory factors are absorbed into the blood stream setting up inflammation and possibly infection in other areas of the body. |
| In humans, periodontal disease significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, including thromboemboli formation, stroke, endocarditis, premature low birth weight, and even pneumonia. This is also true of our dogs and cats. In dogs, there is a positive correlation between the severity of periodontal disease and the level of tissue changes in the myocardium (heart), renal (kidney) and hepatic (liver) tissues. That is why it is important that dental care be an important part of your pet's health care, just as it is yours. |
| The key to keeping your pets mouth healthy is removing the plaque from the teeth to prevent periodontal disease. Remember plaque is the build-up of salivary proteins and bacteria. The protein and bacteria will always be in the mouth, so we need to focus on removing them from the teeth. Certain foods (Hills TD) are made to help physically removed the plaque when they are eating. |
| |
Chew toys and raw hide bones can remove some plaque when they are chewing. Chlorhexedine based solutions can help to decrease the amount of bacteria that are present in the mouth. But the only way to effectively remove the plaque is by brushing the teeth. This is not as hard as it sounds. Most of the plaque that builds up is on the outside (cheek side) of the molars and canines. That means you do not have to brush the insides or the top or bottoms of the teeth, just the outsides. Doing this daily is optimal, however owners that are dedicated to at least weekly brushings see a remarkable difference in calculus build-up. |
Unfortunately once calculus (tartar) had settled in, professional cleaning is the only way to remove the calculus. Brushing or hard bones just cannot remove the cement-like substance. At Aboite Animal Hospital, we have a trained staff of veterinary technicians that perform several dental cleanings per day. The calculus is first removed, and then the teeth are cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler, followed by polishing, and a fluoride treatment. |
| Any extractions, growth removals, or laser surgery procedures are performed by the Veterinarian working on the case.
Animals do need to be placed under anesthesia for the dental cleaning. Even though there may be some potential risk whenever anesthesia is performed, we use current and safe anesthetic protocols for all of our pets. We also use anesthetic monitoring equipment to monitor the vital functions of your pet. Another service we offer is pre-anesthetic blood profiling to identify any underlying disease that may be unknowingly present. The combination of these services allows for safe anesthesia. |
Evaluating the dental health of your pet is always performed as a part of our routine exam. Treatment recommendations are also made at that time. |
At Aboite Animal Hospital, we utilize both “in house” and “outside” laboratory services. For rapid results, we perform “in house” pre-anesthetic blood screens, fecal analysis, complete urinalysis, heartworm checks, leukemia tests, parvo tests, hematocrits, glucose tests for diabetes, liver and kidney testing, etc. |

At Aboite Animal Hospital we utilize two modes of diagnostic imaging. Initially in cases of traumatic injury, we rely on radiographic or X-ray imaging. Our state of the art computer programmed high frequency radiographic imaging system provides an opportunity for lower radiation exposure to your pet when X-rays are indicated. |
| In certain medical conditions following appropriate blood testing and X-rays, we may find it necessary to utilize ultrasound imaging to make an accurate diagnosis. Our digital color ultrasound equipment allows us to evaluate hidden abnormalities within the heart, liver, kidneys, bladder, intestine and spleen. Additionally when necessary, we utilize telemedicine transmission of these ultrasound images to board certified veterinary radiologists for consultation purposes. |
